Father’s Day is fast approaching so let’s discuss the idea of naming your son after the Dad. This is the age old idea of tradition, family history, and an unbreakable bond spanning generations. However, this idea can be long gone and not as common as it once was.
Fifty years ago, it was very common and no one would have questioned the motives behind naming the son after the father. In the most recent years, there is more of an emphasis on new, individual, and unique names rather than traditional. Today’s parents-to-be want their child’s name to inspire admiration and envy. Think pretentious rather than honorable.

Now there is also an Ironic spin on this issue of naming your son. With everyone being innovative and original when it comes to choosing baby names, it leaves the generational names left all by themselves. Therefore, if you decide to go with a traditional Eric or Kevin, named after Dad, your junior may be the only one playing in the Sandbox named after Dad.
There is some Warning for thought if you decide to keep a generational name going. If you plan on having more than one child, make sure you have more names that can be devoted to each child to ensure that no one is left out.
So although times have changed, naming your son after his father is a tradition that has plenty of history to back it up.
