Tips for naming your child

The first thing you should be cautious about when choosing a name for your baby is how the name sounds and whether it’s compatible with your last name. How the name you choose sounds is one of the most important things to think about. Usually, longer first names work better with shorter surnames, and vice versa. Some things to avoid are combining first names that end in a vowel with last names that start with one such as, “Layla Alvarez,” because the names sort of blend together. Other things to avoid would be picking a name that rhymes with your surname. Also, you probably would want to avoid puns such as “Holly Wood.” It might not sound that bad at first, but your child has to live with it for the rest of their life and that might not be fun.
The second thing you should consider is whether or not your child’s name is unique. An uncommon name will make your child stand out from the crowd. If you pick too common of a name your son or daughter might be referred to as Matt T. or Ashley B. their whole younger lives. On the other hand, you might not want to pick a name that is ridiculous and too hard to pronounce. Another way to balance the name would be to choose a simple first name if the surname is complex or to pick a longer more unique first name if the surname is simple. If your son’s last name is Jones, than you might want to name him Cameron or Benjamin instead of Paul.
The meaning or root of the name you choose is somewhat important because sometimes the meaning is transparent. No one is going to treat you son Leo like a King just because his name means King but he might be rather unimpressed if young Alfred grows up to find the literal meaning of his name is “Elf Counsel.” Kids can be cruel so it might be wise to make sure you don’t name your child a name that can easily be turned into an undesirable nickname. You also might not want to pick a feminine name for a boy or a masculine name for a girl. Also, you might want to stay away from a name that is unisex in nature such as Riley or Alex. You must also make sure your kids initials don’t spell out something undesirable such as Z.I.T. or F.A.T. Finally, after all of these guidelines have been said, just remember that the most important reason that a name should be picked is that the people who are choosing it are happy.
