When it comes to naming your baby, you’ve probably considered all of the normal possibilities. It’s common to name your baby after a close family member or friend, or even by picking a name you simply love the sound of. Did you ever consider looking in your pantry? If you’re a chef, you might have. But as many new parents are trying to give their children unique monikers compared to their peers, getting a little extra creative might help you discover the perfect baby name for your son or daughter. While brand names are probably not what you’re looking for, spices might be the perfect ingredient. Spice names can have a wide variety to choose from, and won’t be too obscure while still being uncommon. It’s a pinch of exactly what your baby name planning needed!
Here are our top favorite spice names for you to consider.
Drew Barrymore recently sat down with Ellen Degeneres for some well-deserved baby talk. Barrymore, whose daughter just turned 10-weeks-old, talked about how difficult it was for her to leave her baby girl at home to travel to the show. Amidst some other conversation points, like Ellen accusing Barrymore of being crazy for classifying her daughter as a “nice person,” Barrymore revealed the inspiration behind her daughter’s name.
Barrymore and her husband, Will Kopelman, were reading a book that included, “Your baby is about the size of an olive.” And the name stuck! Barrymore knew she would be naming her daughter Olive when she was only three month’s pregnant. Ellen joked, of course, that it’s a good thing “Olive” was what the text referenced. Kidney Bean Kopelman just doesn’t have the same je ne sais quoi!
Check out the video of Barrymore’s candid Ellen interview above, and we’re glad Olive didn’t end up being named Cilantro, Dill, Durian, Flan, Okra or Rubarb!
We talked about naming your baby after a car—what about food? It’s not entirely unheard of, especially with a few high profile babies with the names Coco, Apple and Peaches. If you’re a chef, baker or a food connoisseur, we understand glancing at a menu to spice up your baby name ideas! Some names have become so common that it doesn’t even seem like a food related name, such as Olive or Oliver. With all of the spices to choose from, there’s plenty of room to get creative with a food related baby name. Here are some of our favorites!
